Toki no Kane (Bell Tower) Guide

Kawagoe's Timeless Symbol: The Toki no Kane Bell Tower Guide

The Toki no Kane, or Bell Tower, is a beloved symbol of Kawagoe, a charming town just north of Tokyo that retains much of its Edo-era atmosphere. This wooden tower stands as a reminder of the town's rich history and provides a picturesque focal point for visitors exploring the Kurazukuri District, known for its traditional clay-walled warehouses. The bell still rings four times a day, its resonant tones echoing through the streets and offering a delightful auditory experience that connects visitors to the past. The original Toki no Kane was built around 400 years ago by Sakai Tadakatsu, the lord of Kawagoe Domain. It has been rebuilt several times due to fires, with the current tower dating back to 1893, constructed after a devastating fire destroyed much of the town. The tower served as the town's official timekeeper, its bell ringing to signal the hours to the residents. The bell was originally rung manually, but it is now automated. The tower is a three-story wooden structure, standing approximately 16 meters tall. Visitors can admire the Toki no Kane from the surrounding streets and alleyways, taking photos and soaking in the atmosphere. While you can't climb the tower itself, the surrounding area offers plenty to explore. The Kurazukuri District is filled with shops selling local crafts, sweets, and souvenirs. Be sure to try some Kawagoe sweet potatoes, a local specialty, prepared in various ways, from roasted to candied. The area around the bell tower is particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season and autumn when the leaves change color.
